About Standards & Training

The Standards & Training division establishes and maintains the professional requirements for law enforcement officers across Mayflower. By setting rigorous training standards, certifications, and conduct guidelines, we ensure that every officer meets the highest professional and ethical benchmarks.

From initial academy training to ongoing professional development, Standards & Training ensures officers possess the knowledge, skills, and moral character necessary to serve the public with integrity. This division oversees officer certification, specialization training, and decertification of officers who violate professional standards.

Core Responsibilities

Officer Certification

Establishing and maintaining officer certification standards across all agencies

Academy Training

Overseeing basic law enforcement academy curricula and certification requirements

Continuing Education

Requiring and tracking ongoing professional development for all officers

Specialization Training

Certifying specialized training (K-9, SWAT, Investigation, etc.)

Performance Standards

Establishing conduct and performance expectations for all law enforcement

Decertification

Managing officer decertification for misconduct or failure to meet standards

Mandatory Training Programs

Basic Law Enforcement Academy

Duration: 18-24 weeks

Comprehensive foundational training for all new law enforcement officers

De-escalation & Community Relations

Duration: 16 hours annually

Required annual training on conflict de-escalation and community policing

Use of Force & Liability

Duration: 8 hours annually

Annual training on legal and policy aspects of force use

Ethics & Integrity

Duration: 4 hours annually

Annual ethics training emphasizing accountability and professional standards

Mental Health Crisis Response

Duration: 8 hours bi-annually

Training on recognizing and responding to individuals in mental health crisis

Professional Standards All Officers Must Meet

High School Diploma or GED
Valid Driver's License
Physical & Medical Fitness
Psychological Evaluation
Background Investigation
Drug Screening
Clean Criminal Record
Demonstrated Moral Character
